I first discovered Dropkick in a 2005 Internet search for Christmas music (naturally). I found them on the Tartan Podcast (seemingly inactive now), which exclusively featured the music of Scottish bands and artists. The 2005 Christmas song was "Writing to Santa", a fun little alt-country ditty. But the group had a nice sound about them, so I looked for a few more tracks and discovered their jangly pop side. I made a mental note to keep tabs on the band. I didn't, of course, or not for very long anyway. In 2007, I found a BBC podcast featuring "Scampi For Christmas" and was reminded how much I like these guys. I made a mental note to keep tabs on them. And, of course, I didn't.
So here we are in 2010 and, once again, Christmas music brings us together. The 4-song vinyl EP is being put out on red vinyl by Sound Asleep Records, but they don't really sell things directly and, so far, I've found no one offering the vinyl anywhere. All 4 songs are holiday themed and all 4 are new, with "I May Never" featuring guest vocals from Alice Marra Clark of The Hazey Janes.
The digital EP, on the other hand, is currently available from Amazon MP3 and iTunes. It not only features the 4 new tracks from the red vinyl EP, but the two earlier Christmas songs I mentioned above.
Since it's kind of hard to explain what a Scottish Alt-Country Power-Pop band would sound like, you really ought to listen to Dropkick's most recent full album, "Abelay Hotel"--stream it in full at Last FM. You can even pick up one track from the album for free.
